I could see that it would be a very good turnout today, as I turned to drive up the hill towards the starting point. A great many cars, all parked neatly along the wide verge of this very little used road, Lea gardens now being closed for the winter. After a few words from our leader, Howard, focusing on walking safely along the roads we would be using, an emphasis on walking single file and keeping to the right, facing oncoming traffic. We then set off around the educational activity centre field. A high wall prevented most, except those with longer legs, from seeing the extent of the permanent equipment set out on the large playing field, see picture. We passed over the village street and made our way to Dethick Church, passing through the churchyard, to walk on, down Dethick Lane to enter into Wood Lane. A lovely walled path / track, it’s half a mile long, great views over nearby fields and woods. At the end we entered into Cunnery Wood and then over that very big stone stile, to walk the fields and Green Lane to recross Dethick Lane. Here taking our morning break at Crossways. Afterwards walking the length of Shaw Lane, to pass by Lea Hall, where we note, was the early childhood home of Florence Nightingale. We took the next path left and walked a wonderful sheltered track and field paths, southwards. We passed by two fine Limousins, obviously part of the larger herd in the adjacent fields of Upper Holloway Farm. Then over the last stile of the day and into Long Lane, which we followed back to the waiting cars. Along the way we passed, a fenced field containing some lovely Red Deer, especially as two noble stags were quite near the roadside. They seemed quite used to people pointing cameras at them, as they posed, antlers aloft. See picture. A lovely walk, always different things to see, as the seasons change. Thanks Howard.
