5 of us met at the village car park in Eyam on a fine morning. Having checked that we all had enough liquids and no leaks we set off out of the village then along Tideswell Lane. This is long and rocky underfoot but the views were well worth it. We headed to Brosterfield Farm then enjoyed great views, over the rather parched landscape, and particularly of the top end of Cressbrook Dale and the dramatic Peter’s Stone. Most of the sheep were sheltering in the shade but just before we had our morning break we met a very large herd of Limousine cattle with a gorgeous bull in the midst and lots of very young calves. After our break at Stanley House we headed to Silly Dale. No one misbehaved and from there we followed the road to Grindlow then across fields and woodland to the road below Hucklow Edge. We had spotted the gliders already and had several good views of them after that. We followed the road, closed to traffic because of the sink holes, and enjoyed our lunch sitting opposite the Barrel Pub looking over the landscape to the south of us and we even spotted Minninglow. After lunch we set off downhill along a very narrow and steep path, trying to avoid the gorse bushes and the bramble runners. We surfaced on the outskirts of Black Hole Mine which we navigated our way around. We crossed a couple of bone dry fields before entering some lovely woodland, a respite from the now very hot sun. From here we made our way back to Eyam by way of the road and a steep track that runs parallel with Jumber Brook. We arrived back at the cars at 2.30.
