On a glorious but breezy morning we set off out of Ashford, warming up the legs walking up Hill Cross and then onwards up the wonderfully named Pennyunk lane, the views were fabulous. Following this to the end, we traversed above the Monsal viaduct with a clear view of the structure, due to recent tree removal then on to our break at the view point.
After our break, we continued through Little Longstone and over to the Monsal Trail, then as we reached Thornbridge Hall we called in to see the “Love Locker”. The fairly newly constructed display of the love locks removed from the Bakewell bridge of the same name (instructions are provided for finding a lock from the bridge as they have been placed in a specific position related to their original
location ).
Onwards we went to reach the bridleway to Bakewell, agreeing a rest stop at the top, with a wonderful view overlooking Bakewell and for while joined by some interested cattle and calves, from their vantage point over the wall.
Down to the river and packhorse bridge, the river glistening in the sunshine and spring flowers in abundance. We briefly walked up Buxton Road before following the footpath across Lakeside and back down the River Wye, for the walk back to Ashford along the lovely riverside path. Jayne.
