On a very lovely morning 16 of us met in the car park at Chatsworth House. We walked through the park towards Baslow, passing through the intriguing circular gate. Via the village Green that was full of daffodils in bloom we crossed the road and began the long, steady ascent up to Baslow Edge and Wellington’s monument. We all realised that we were wearing too many layers as we warmed up during the climb. We had our morning break at the monument then set off towards the Sheffield Road, stopping to look at the highland cattle then the old marker post and the modern companion stone. On reaching the moorland we encountered wet, boggy areas and the path was not always apparent. Once on Birchen Edge we could really appreciate the views all around us. We stopped at Nelson’s monument and the 3 ships for lunch enjoying not only the food but also the lovely weather. After our break we continued along the edge before taking the rocky descent down to the Robin Hood. We crossed the road then the stream and on towards Dobb Edge. A few rocky ups and downs then onwards and upwards to Chatsworth Park again. From the Hunting Tower we took the steep steps down to the winding path and back to Chatsworth House and a welcome cuppa.
