Certainly, time for another layer today, a bit of a nip in the air as we gathered in the spacious car park of Whitworth Park, still a few hardy folk, in shorts and sturdy knees aglow. We gathered together for a few words from our leader then a walk through Whitworth Park, a great starting place, the monument to Joseph Whitworth nearby. Sir Joseph Whitworth, entrepreneur, part of his bequest was used to construct the Whitworth Institute and this park is still in trust to this day, for all to enjoy, a lovely setting for outdoor activities of many kinds. Leaving the park, we set off at a sprightly pace, along the road to Darley Bridge. A small but busy bridge, used by heavy and light traffic, so caution taken as we walked the narrow footway across the bridge over the River Derwent. Turning left beside the river and almost immediately leaving the Derwent Valley Heritage way, to climb, with great views over the A6 corridor, steadily to the eastern end of the Oaker Ridge, then to follow the path down to Lobby farm, just before it, taking our morning break on the hillside just opposite. Wensley Dale beckoned, yes there are two such places, this one not quite as popular as the one up north. We walked through the pretty little village of Wensley, making our way through wonderful woodland, along permissive paths towards Oldfield Lane to exit near the entrance to Darley Bridge village. We recrossed the bridge and followed our outward track back to the park. A third of our number headed into the Whitworth Park Café, housed in part of the former Whitworth Institute, which many will also know as The Whitworth Hotel. I make no apologies for the many autumnal pictures, as the incoming weather systems will soon rob us of some the beauty, such as we have seen today. We walked past a fully grown Holly Tree (pictured) it to, like the many shops, keen to remind us of the next season ahead. Great walk Gerry, with many paths, we had not explored before.
