12 of us met at Hartington today for a modified 7 mile walk. It had rained so heavily that I erred on the side of caution. We set off over pastures and uphill towards Sheen, meeting a very inquisitive herd of young cattle on the way. We continued over more fields towards Brund where we stopped for our morning break. Most of the day we had great views of the range of hills from Wolfescote to Wetton and Ecton on one side and the Dragon’s Back on the other. We also saw and heard curlews throughout the day. We passed Brund Mill, recently restored, crossed the River Manifold, then followed paths across fields full of buttercups. As we reached the road a pair of lapwing began calling and warning us that they had a nest. The route then took us over moorland, a range of very difficult stiles and a couple of minor roads to reach our lunch spot just outside Hulme End. Having made use of the facilities at Hulme End we crossed the Manifold again and began our return towards Hartington. We passed the ‘Boutique Glamping’ site at Scaldersitch Farm then tackled the tricky descent at Banktop before crossing the River Dove back into Derbyshire. At this point, those in the group who didn’t know the area, could see the welcoming sight of the church at Hartington in the distance.
