Lower Hartshay to Wingfield Manor and back. 18 of us assembled at where the canal meets the old road at Lower Hartshay. Cold but dry, cloudy and no sun. Very muddy in a few places, but mostly fine underfoot. 

Interesting walk through the ages so to speak. Started off along now disused Cromford canal, dry in places. 18th Century, Through Pentrich, famous for its Martyrs 1817. Then along the ridge on the line of the Roman road.  We had coffee on the site of a Roman Fortlet. (Now, just grassy hillocks)

Alongside the railway mid 1800s built now mainline to Sheffield. Through South Wingfield. Pit village, pit open 1901 to 1967. Wingfield Manor a Tudor ruin. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here. Then back to Lower Hartshay, road cut off in the 20th century to build the A38.
