Our walk today started in a very flooded car park, which had recently been closed by the local Parish Council, but a very kind “Ian from The Friends of Doe Hill Country Park” came along and opened it for us to use the space available. Thank you Ian.
We set off in the drizzle, which then turned to heavy rain, along a pavement section towards the back of Tibshelf Community School to skirt a newly ploughed field, then to avoid a very wet section of field we made our way through residential roads to Church Lane, emerging at the Tom Hulatt mile marker. Tom was a Tibshelf athlete and on 6th May 1954 came third in Roger Bannister’s first sub-four-minute mile race in Oxford. Well done Tom.
We turned south onto the Five Pits Trail crossing Tibshelf High Street making our way to Tibshelf Ponds where we had a very pleasant break at the picnic tables, with the sun now shining! Lots of big fish in the pond too.
A less muddy walk along the Silverhill Trail towards Blackwell took us to Gloves Lane, we crossed Alfreton Road to enter Doe Hill Country Park making our way through a little bit more mud and running water back to the car park.
All in all, a bit of rain, a bit of mud, and some lovely welcome sunshine - that’s been March this year!
